D. Michael Haggerty, II
Michael Haggerty was born and raised in rural Bryan County, the son and grandson of farmers. He attended school at Caddo for most of his childhood, and graduated from Durant in 1990. After he was awarded a National Merit Scholarship, he attended the University of Oklahoma, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in History in 1993. He then attended law school at OU, graduating with a Juris Doctorate with Distinction in 1996.
On graduation, Michael returned to Durant and opened a private practice here in conjunction with his father, Don M. Haggerty. As Haggerty & Haggerty, they practiced together until 2007, when they separated their practices. Michael then began his solo practice as Haggerty Law Office, PLLC, which continued until 2022. In May 2022, Michael closed his practice and accepted a position as Criminal Chief for the Office of Tribal Prosecutor for the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. In May 2024, he was promoted to Tribal Prosecutor. He left that position the following year, and resumed his private practice in Durant.
Michael is widely recognized as the premier appellate attorney in southern Oklahoma, for both civil and criminal cases. His years of practice have also given him extensive experience in the trial of virtually every type of case which can be tried in an Oklahoma state district court or the Choctaw Nation's tribal court, including civil litigation, criminal prosecutions, family law, probate, and property disputes. Michael also has served a number of small towns in the area for many years as their city attorney, and served as municipal judge for the City of Madill for 18 years, giving him extensive knowledge and experience of the issues which can be raised in that arena. As an attorney, Michael has been recognized across the state for his legal research and writing skills; among his accomplishments is the 2006 Golden Quill Award from the Criminal Law Section of the Oklahoma Bar Association.
Public service is also part of Michael’s life. He served as Bryan County’s contractor with the Oklahoma Indigent Defense System (effectively serving as Bryan County’s chief public defender) from 2001 to 2022. From 2008 to 2022, he served on the Board of Directors for the Oklahoma Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, and served as President 2012-2014, and Treasurer since 2017. He also serves as Scoutmaster for Troop 10, Marshall County's Scouts BSA Troop, and as Chartered Organization Representative for Pack 121, Madill's Cub Scout pack. Michael has been recognized for his efforts in Scouting by receiving the District Cubmaster of the Year Award for 2015, the District Award of Merit for 2017, District Scoutmaster of the Year Award for 2019, and the Silver Beaver Award in 2023; additionally, as an active Associate Adviser and Vigil Member for the Order of the Arrow, Michael received the Founder's Award in 2022.
The biggest focus of Michael’s life, however, is his family. He is the father of three adult sons, and he and his wife, Lynnette, also have an adult daughter, who is the mother of their grandson and granddaughter. They are also active in their church, the Madill Church of Christ.
